Looking After Your Eyes

Health and happiness go hand in hand. Embellishing your your health leads to a happy life, but at times it can also be frustrating. Trying to remember when problems begin, verbalizing the issues, and making time to find a health practitioner who will listen and make sense of it all is a big task. It can be time consuming, confronting, and daunting.

As an Optometrist working with patients everyday over the last decade, Simon understands that taking care of your eyes and your vision is not always straight forward. These are some of the interesting things he has heard from people over the years

  • “Sometimes I think something is in my peripheral vision, like an animal running past me, but I turn to look and there’s nothing there.”
  • “When I park my car, I lean toward the right side of my garage more than the left side.”
  • “The images I see through my left eye look really magnified when I wear my glasses, I feel like I’m 4ft tall instead of 6ft tall.”
  • “I was driving along when suddenly there was a blurry patch of grey and sparkles in my right eye, and I had to pull over for 20 minutes until it subsided.”

All of those things may seem like they don’t make sense at first. You may feel as though something is happening with your eyes but you’re not sure how to describe it, you’re not sure if it even makes sense, but you just know it’s not right.

Simon says

It’s okay. You are not going crazy.

If you are experiencing changes to your vision, or the way your eyes are coping with work and leisure, or even if you would like to check in to make sure everything is working as they should be, Simon would be really happy to see you.

Eye Tests

It takes approximately 30 minutes for a consultation – getting to know you, performing a comprehensive examination, and then providing you with solutions for improving and maintaining your vision and eye health. Additional time is occasionally required for tests outside of this schedule, such as a computerised perimetry test which assesses peripheral vision.

You may also wish to allocate around 30 minutes of your time to choose spectacle frames, and have spectacle lens solutions explained to you so that you are well equipped to use these devices. Simon works with outstanding colleagues who have extensive knowledge in optics.

Contact Lenses

If you have not worn contact lenses before but are interested in using them, Simon can provide you with contact lens prescriptions, recommendations of materials (soft or hard, big or small), and wearing schedules. This is typically followed by a separate consultation to teach you to handle the lenses, applying the lenses onto the eye comfortably, removing them from the eye safely, and guidance of cleaning products.

If you currently wear contact lenses, please bring them to your consultation. If there are aspects you like or dislike about your contact lens wearing, Simon can provide solutions. Contact lens technologies are constantly improving.

You may have also heard of something called Orthokeratology. This is where lenses are worn during the night while sleeping (typically 6-8 hours) and after removal of these ‘sleep-in lenses’ in the morning vision is corrected. You will have the luxury of not wearing glasses or contact lenses in the day time while maintaining clear vision. Recently, this has been widely documented in Optometry (both nationally and internationally) as a solution in controlling the progression of myopia. Simon can offer you an assessment for eligibility of this type of lens wear.
