What is Keratoconus?
Keratoconus is a non-inflammatory eye condition in which the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) progressively becomes thin and cone-shaped. This causes light entering the eye to be distorted, leading to blurred or multiple images, and sensitivity to light and glare.
An optometrist can diagnose keratoconus through a comprehensive eye exam and use corneal topography to map the shape of the cornea. Rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses can be used to correct vision in people with keratoconus. RGPs are made of a stiffer material than traditional soft contact lenses and can help to give the front surface of the eye a new, clear optical shape and improve vision.
Regular follow-up appointments with an optometrist are important to monitor the progression of keratoconus and ensure that the contact lenses are providing optimal vision correction. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct vision and prevent further progression of the condition.
