Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss. There are two main types of glaucoma: primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and secondary closed angle glaucoma. POAG is the most common form and occurs when the fluid in the eye does not drain properly, causing a build-up of pressure that can damage the optic nerve. Secondary closed angle glaucoma occurs when the iris blocks the drainage angle in the eye, causing a sudden increase in pressure that can damage the optic nerve.

An optometrist can diagnose glaucoma through a comprehensive eye exam that measures eye pressure, evaluates the optic nerve, and assesses visual field. An optometrist can also monitor the progression of the condition and provide therapy and advice to help manage symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.

Treatment for glaucoma may include medications, laser therapy, or surgery. Medications can help to reduce eye pressure and protect the optic nerve, while laser therapy can help to improve fluid drainage and reduce eye pressure. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to create a new drainage channel in the eye or remove a portion of the iris.

It’s important for patients with glaucoma to attend regular eye exams to monitor the progression of the condition and ensure that their vision is being managed effectively. Simon can provide guidance and support to help improve vision and maintain good eye health, and can refer you to a specialist for additional treatment if necessary. Early detection and treatment are key in preventing vision loss from glaucoma.
